The existing Al Hidd Phases I and II facilities are located on the eastern coast of Bahrain, adjacent to the Arabian Gulf and approximately 3 km south of Bahrain International Airport. The facilities are installed in an area of around 500,000 m2 on land which lies approximately 2.2 m above sea level.
Currently there are two phases of power plant on the site;
Phase I which has a power capacity of 280MW gross with a desalination capacity of 30MIGD, it entered full commercial operation in early 2000.
Phase I consists of two 13E2 gas turbines manufactured by Alstom whose exhaust gas exhaust into a medium pressure HRSG. The steam from the two HRSGs is supplied to a common steam header which supplies 4 MSF (Multiple Stage Flash) desalination units which are rated at 7.5MIGD each
Phase II currently has a power capacity of 675MW (in condensing mode) and entered full commercial operation in 2004. Phase II has the interconnections for a desalination plant to be integrated into it as part of the scope of supply for Phase III.
Phase II consists of three 13E2 combined cycle gas turbines manufactured by Alstom whose exhaust gas exhaust into a vertical natural circulation HRSG with supplementary firing. The gas turbines are capable of operating in open or combined cycle by the use of diverting dampers and a guillotine plate. The Alstom steam turbine has an extraction on the IP/LP turbine cross over pipe for the desalination plant. The LP section exhausts into a condenser.
Phase III will consist of an expansion to the desalination capacity by 60MIGD and the installation of additional hardware including black start capability.
